Cairo Opera Orchestra
Nader Abbassi
In 2001, Nader Abbassi was appointed
artistic director and principal
conductor of the
Cairo Opera Orchestra.
In this position he benefits from his
unusually wide professional experience
as a composer, singer and bassoonist. Abbassi is also the artistic director
and principal conductor of the Orchestre
pour la Paix, Paris, that regularly
performs throughout Europe, most
recently at the Théâtre du Châtelet in
Paris.
Apart from his dedication to symphonic
works of the traditional repertoire he
has a rising reputation as an opera and
ballet conductor. In 2002, he made an
acclaimed debut in the mega production
of Aida at the pyramids in Giza. Since
then he conducted with great success a
large number of performances at the
Cairo Opera House (a.o. La Traviata,
Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Cavalleria
Rusticana, Pagliacci, The Magic Flute,
Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Zorba,
Carmina Burana, Le Sacre du Printemps)
In 2006, Nader Abbassi conducted
Menotti’s forgotten opera Maria Golovine
with the presence of the composer
himself at the Marseille Opera House
which was immediately followed by
re-invitations to conduct Verdi’s Un
Ballo in Maschera and Aida in 2008.
Other coming events include Aida at the
Shanghai Opera House (China) and the
Opera of Thessaloniki.
He has been invited to conduct several
international orchestras, such as

Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg,
Orchester des Richard Strauss

For his compositions he received several
prizes from the Ministry of Culture of
Egypt, including the 1st prize for
composition in 1986 and 1996. Among
others, the Geneva Ballet Company,
Geneva Chamber Orchestra and the Swiss
Clarinet Players commissioned new
compositions.
He obtained a first prize of virtuosity
for his bassoon play in 1990. In 1996,
he was awarded the prize of virtuosity
for his singing from the Geneva
conservatoire. As a singer he appeared
as a soloist in the fields of opera,
lied, oratorio, baroque and contemporary
music
For several seasons Nader Abbassi held
the place of the 1st bassoon at the
Cairo Symphony Orchestra, and at the
Geneva Chamber Orchestra where he
appeared as a soloist. He regularly
played with the Lausanne Chamber
Orchestra and the Ensemble Vocal et
Instrumental de Lausanne under the
direction of Michel Corboz and
participated in several recordings.
